Are you toying with the idea of learning how to play the piano as an adult? Do it! Learning piano as an adult is often so much better than it was when you were a kid. You have the time, you have the headspace, and you know what a valuable skill it can be to enjoy a fulfilling hobby at home. There are loads of benefits to learning how to play as an adult!

A growing trend shows that people regret not having devoted themselves to their piano lessons with greater vigor, and they are now subjecting themselves to practicing scales. A BBC report from a year ago (October 2014) investigated why, and discovered that beyond music being a passion in general (and we know that it is), the percussive element of hitting 88 keys (or some percentage thereof) can be therapeutic. Moreover, playing any musical instrument rewires the brain, as it were, with increased connectivity and therefore sophistication. It’s not incidental – or inaccurate – that people say playing an instrument makes you smarter!

[bctt tweet=” Playing any musical instrument rewires the brain with increased connectivity and sophistication.”]

In fact, being an adult gives you several advantages when it comes time to learn to play.

Your mom’s not nagging

First and foremost is the fact that you are doing so on your own volition, and not because your parents or grandparents have insisted that you learn an instrument. When you choose your own path, you are more likely to find your passion in it.

You KNOW that practice makes perfect.

The odds are good that you have had experience with the effects of practice in the past, and you know that if you want to develop a skill truly, you need to practice. Even if you don’t aspire to Carnegie Hall, you still know that whatever practice, practice, practice you undertake will serve you well (a tidbit that many children don’t realize as they are burdened with practice sessions).

Your ear has earned the advantage of time

Finally, the fact that you want to learn to play as an adult suggests that you have a love of music, and the very fact that you have been listening to music your entire life puts you in an enviable position when it comes to learning the technicalities. That is, once you already have a feel for the music itself, learning which keys to depress is a matter of fulfilling what you already know, as compared to the child who starts from nothing.

Music education isn’t what it used to be!

The other advantage you have is the advancement of educational technology, which has harnessed gaming features that provide feedback in real time, and applies them to learning to play piano, so that the student is guided through the process note by note.

Check out Simply Piano, the latest app from Simply (formerly JoyTunes) to learn the piano basics step-by-step.

Beginner pianist learning to read and play piano music notes with the Simply Piano app.
Simply Piano makes learning how to read notes easy and fun

Learning the piano isn’t so bad when you know the basics of reading notes. In this short article, we walk you through the basics of piano notes for beginners.

When you see sheet music for the first time, it could look like some kind of cave-man script from another eon. For the beginner, this can be very unsettling.

We got you. Let’s begin by walking through the fundamentals of all you need to know to start reading music notes and playing them on piano.

Reading music notes for beginners

Music is a language of sound.

When an instrument produces a sound, that sound vibrates at a particular frequency or pitch.

In Western music, we use twelve specific frequencies, called notes. These twelve frequencies repeat themselves across high and low registers of pitch.

In other words, we call the frequency of a sound pitch and organize them in a system of symbols we call notes.

We use letters from A to G to name seven of the twelve notes and use sharps and flats for the remaining five. The symbol sharp (#) means slightly higher than the note it’s in front of, and flat (b) means slightly lower.

Flat and sharp notes have two names, depending on the context. In the end, it looks something like this:

Notes appear in various ways, but all have a circle and sometimes a line. The vertical line attached to the note is called a stem. The circle is the head, and it could be full or empty. These determine the rhythmic value of the note.

You can write and read all of these notes on a visual structure called a staff.

Learn more about How to Read Sheet Music on our blog.

The staff and the ledger lines

A staff is a stack of five horizontal lines.

There are five lines and four spaces between them. Each line and space represent a note, with the low notes on the bottom lines and the high notes on the top.

Of course, the range of instruments usually exceeds the lines of the staff. To write notes below or above the staff, we use ledger lines. These are short horizontal lines written through or below the circle of the note.

We write piano notes on a grand staff with ten lines altogether, split into two groups of five.

Grand staffs are for instruments with a wide range of pitch or music that requires two separate but simultaneous parts (like a right hand and left hand).

The middle C note, which is more or less at the center of the keyboard, sits between the two staffs on a ledger line.

The clefs

A clef symbol appears on the far left side of the staff. It indicates which note falls on which line. The range of your instrument determines the clef you use so that the notes are in the right places.

You use the treble clef for piano to write music for your right hand. The center of the circle of the treble clef sits on the second line from the bottom of the staff and indicates the note G. This is why it’s also known as G clef.

We use the bass clef to write music for instruments with a lower register, such as the piano’s left hand or a bass guitar. The line between the two dots of the bass clef is an F below the middle C. This is why it’s also known as the F clef.

Key signature and time signature

There are two more crucial pieces of information at the beginning and to the right of the clef.

The first is the key signature. It tells you how many sharps or flats are in the music. If a sharp or flat appears in the key signature, it will not appear in notes. If the composer adds an extra sharp or flat beyond the key signature, they write it next to the notes.

The time signature is to the right of the key signature, just before the actual notes appear. This indicates the division of rhythm in the song, alongside the bar lines, which create vertical divisions along the horizontal staff lines to group the notes according to rhythm value.

The top number of the time signature is the number of beats per bar. The bottom number of the time signature is the type of beat (half note, quarter note, eighth note). You can read more about time signatures in our blog post How to Play Music in 4/4

You know those articles you start reading before realizing that they’re actually advertisements? The article may have some useful tips, but it’s really just trying to sell you something. That’s sort of what happened here, but in an unintentional way—it just so happens that some of these products are the absolute best purchases I’ve made for myself and my kids. So, keep your eyes wide-open as you read!

My name is Ms. Becki, and I am a private music teacher.  I mostly teach piano, but also teach drums, guitar, and many other instruments.  I learned them because I have ADD but totally did not know it while growing up.  My husband and I have two kids who also suffer from ADD.  Between the ages of four to twelve, I had no idea what ADD/ADHD (no, I’m not going to talk about the differences between them—I’m not a doctor. Focus!) looked like in my son. He is bright, artistic, good with his hands, and has no difficulty with authority. However, he cannot remember to put on two socks when we leave the house, and his grades are hit or miss—and mostly miss because he can never remember to put his name on his papers.  Fast forward to today: after he was diagnosed and began treatment, his overall concentration showed much improvement.

As an educator, you’d think that I would have recognized the symptoms earlier.  ADHD 1 and 2 look different on everyone. Since music lessons are great for ADHD kids, I want to share with you some of the recommended music apps (and one company in particular) I used with my own son. See: an ad. I’m sorry!

Keezy Drummer

I love Keezy Drummer because it teaches rhythm.  It’s a creative yet concrete way to teach your musician the structure and fractions of rhythm. It will also help with math and algebra, but don’t tell the kids that! I also a way

SoundBrenner Pulse

I’ve just ordered the SoundBrenner Pulse; it’s an app that physically taps you. If you have a serious musician in the house, this will really help them “feel” time.  My son is super excited to get it; I, sadly, don’t need it because I slept with a metronome under my pillow for years to learn tempos. This, however, would have been much better. Technology for the win!

Piano Maestro

Piano Maestro is an app that, quite simply, teaches piano skills and is a real game changer for teachers, but also this company’s really amazing to its parent- and student-users. You create a login and begin to play: no cables, no setup, no hassle.  Put your iPad on the piano or keyboard and, when you see the highlighted key on the iPad, press the corresponding key on your instrument to play the song.

When it’s over you get your results. Three stars? Whoot, you mastered it!  For the ADHD crowd, it’s great to receive that feedback. The songs are short and the library is full of current top-forty pop hits; in other words, songs that every kid wants to learn. The app also has video game and movie themes.

You’ll have a hard time stopping your child from playing this app, but why would you want to anyway if they’re having such a good time and learning so much?

Another great aspect of this company: if you need a teacher who’s trained in music technology, they will help you find one in your area.  Yup. They certify thousands of teachers who are ready and able to help make the musical journey a great experience for your child. It kind of makes you want to learn to play too, doesn’t it? If so, check out Simply Piano, also by JoyTunes.

As you can tell, I get super excited about teaching—you might even say I get jump-up-and-down, can barely be contained excited when I find apps that really connect with my kids.

The combination of music and an ADHD musician is the most wonderful way to bring new music into the world.  An ADHD musician’s creativity and energy is amazing to see and experience.  Give your kids the tools to be all they can be!

What is a piano chord finder? How does it work? Find out all the answers in this article and discover the best chord finder websites of 2022.

There are structures, methods, and techniques for practicing and learning music. The best musicians claim they learned their craft from exploring, experimenting, and improvising. Some of them never even learned music theory. All of their art was born from a deep, playful relationship with the instrument.

The most useful tools help us connect our exploration with the language of musical knowledge. This is where the piano chord finder comes in. You can freely combine notes and then figure out the official names for your combinations and creations. Knowing this terminology makes it easier to communicate our ideas with other musicians.

In this article, we’ll explain what a piano chord finder is, how it works, and recommend some of the best chord finder websites around today.

What is a piano chord finder?

Almost every combination of notes has a chord name that binds them together. Some of these names are very simple. For example, C, E, G, and B would be called Cmaj7. Other combinations of notes are more obscure, like F, G, Bb, C, or Fsus4(add9).

Another complicating factor is some combinations of notes having multiple names, depending on the order of notes in the chord and context of the song. For example, the four notes of Cmaj7 could also be called Em6, and the notes of Fsus4(add9) could also be called Bbsus2(add6).

A chord finder is a website that tells you all the possible chord names for any combination of notes. The services are usually free and easy to use – just input the notes, and the system shows all the chord name options.

How does it work?

Let us paint you a little picture.

You’re sitting at home next to your piano and lay your hands on the keys without looking at the notes. There’s an unusual sound. After playing it a few times and experimenting with notes, you want to remember this chord for the next time–does this musical creature have a name?

You go to the computer and search for “chord finder.” You find this article. Then you go to the list below of the best chord finders and click on one of the links.

You look back at your piano, and one note at a time, you see if you can name all the notes in this chord you’ve discovered. The chord finder on the screen usually has a few options for inputting the notes: either on a virtual fretboard, a virtual keyboard, or by simply selecting the names of the notes from a drop-down list. Press “process,” “go,” or “find my chord” and receive a list of all chord names.

Let’s take a look at an example.

I was playing on my piano, and my fingers found their way to the notes A, C#, E, and F#. I typed them into the chord finder, giving me the list. These four notes could be called A6; with a different bass note, it could function as F#m7; in a rarer context, you could even use these notes as a C#m(add4)b6.

Make sure you always listen carefully to the chord in all its variations. Ultimately, we use our ears to play music and must train them well. For some tips, check out Ear Training for Beginners

Recommended piano chord finders.

A clear and concise website, which is very beginner friendly. When you select the note names from the keyboard image, it gives you options to specify. For example, you chose the note Eb – would you like to call it Eb or D#? This will affect the chord’s name, so it’s good to be clear. Once you’ve specified all the note names, it gives you an option to choose the root or bass note of the chord.

In the end, the list is very precise and comprehensive. After it shows you the names of the chords, it also describes the process for figuring out the chord so that you can do it yourself next time.

This website calls a chord finder  a “chord identifier” or a “reverse chord finder.” But it’s precisely like the chord finder we described to you.

You choose the notes from an image of a piano or a guitar fretboard. Then, you click “find these notes,” and it takes you to a page with all the different name options for that collection of notes.

It’s a little less easy on the eyes. The graphics are convoluted and small. But the list is very precise and detailed – great if you want to understand how chord names are figured out.

This is a reverse chord finder. It’s for a situation where you know the chord’s name but not the notes to play. Here’s how it works: inputting the chord’s name shows you which notes to play. You choose the key (for example, B), the symbol (for example, flat), and then the chord type (for example, minor7).  You can choose your instrument: guitar, piano, ukelele, or music notation. Green dots appear on the instrument diagram to show you which notes to play to make the chord of your choice. It’s well set out and easy to use –  perfect for sitting in front of a chord chart and seeing a chord name you don’t recognize.

Playing the piano is not an easy undertaking. We have to use all the resources at our disposal to learn the practice’s ins and outs. Take advantage of your chord finders to learn more about harmony, and of course, download the Simply Piano app for interactive and step-by-step guidance in your piano playing.

Are you searching for the best piano tuning apps to get your instrument sounding right? Check out our list of the best piano tuning apps for Androids and IOS.

Instruments require tuning regularly, and pianos are no exception. Neglecting your instrument results in strings that are too loose or tight and too flat or sharp of notes.

You can always tune your instrument by ear. However, most of us lack the experience and fine hearing to do that. That’s why there are tuning devices—so we can adjust our instruments properly without the help of professionals.

Piano tuning apps make calibrating your instrument much simpler (and more affordable). The apps work with various iOS and Android devices and are easy to install.

But which piano tuning app is the best?

Ultimately, you decide. But to make things easier here are the five best piano tuning apps in 2022.

What is a chromatic tuner?

Most piano tuning apps use a chromatic tuner. Before phone apps, they were the most common device for tuning string instruments. Today, chromatic tuners are available in clip-on, pedal, microphone, and application formats.

By playing a note using a built-in microphone, the tuner detects the sound and displays the pitch you’re playing relative to the nearest semitone on the chromatic scale.

Tuning your instrument.

Tuning your piano is essential when caring for your instrument and ensuring the notes create the correct sounds.

Although even with the best piano app available, it’s useless if you don’t know how to tune your instrument.

Now that you know how to tune your instrument choosing the right app is much clearer.

Check out our Piano Tuning Essentials & DIY blog to learn how to tune your piano.

1. Pano Tuner.

Pano Tuner (yes, that’s how you spell it)..is the top-rated chromatic tuner on Google Play and works seamlessly with pianos, guitars, trumpets, upright basses, and countless other instruments.

The app is free, simple, and ready to go from the moment you open it. Just play a note, and the app displays whether your pitch is in or out of tune in seconds.

Pano Tuner also offers a lot of possibilities in terms of customization. For instance, you can adjust the sensitivity for more accurate tuning, create harmony, and more.

Features:

  • Fast response time
  • Tunes various instruments
  • Chromatic tuning
  • Adjustable sensitivity
  • Adjustable settings

The app is available on Android and iOS.

2. PianoMeter – Professional Piano Tuner.

Another fine choice for tuning your instrument is PianoMeter. What distinguishes this app is its unique interface – the app gives the user a clear picture of how in-tune or out-of-tune your piano is.

The display includes a numbered dial, a keyboard that shows which key you’re pressing, and a graph. So there’s no mistaking which key you’re playing and whether or not it’s tuned. When a note is in tune, the dial goes to zero. If it’s too sharp, it shows a minus (-); if it’s too flat, a plus (+) followed by a number.

With this app, you can enjoy a free version, although it only tunes C3 and C5. To adjust the rest of your piano and use a host of other features requires you to purchase the app.

Features:

  • Automatic note detection
  • Adjustable settings
  • An ideal tuning curve to compare your piano sounds to the perfect tone.
  • Create multiple tuning files

The app is available on Android and iOS.

3. Tuner & Metronome.

With over ten million downloads, Tuner & Metronome is a popular choice. This app is more than a mere tuning device and metronome. Designed by musicians, it comes with over 4,000 available music sheets, and you can upload your own and record the music you create.

The app is easy-to-use and comes with two tuning modes, chromatic and pitchfork. So it can help you tune various instruments, including piano, guitar, violin, harmonica, and many more.

Features:

  • Multiple tuning setting
  • Works with a plethora of instrument
  • Built-in metronome
  • Over 4,000 pages of sheet music

The app is available on Android and iOS.

4. BOSS Tuner.

Created by Roland Corporation, BOSS Tuner – based on the original Chromatic Tuner TU-3 – is an excellent chromatic tuner.

The app offers an audible reference pitch function to help you tune your instrument by ear. However, if that’s not how your roll, the chromatic tuner uses the microphone from your phone to help you tune your piano. You can adjust the sensitivity, fork, and background color to your preferences.

The app is free to download, incredibly accurate (just like the TU-3), and works seamlessly with guitars, basses, and pianos.

Features:

  • Accurately tunes a wide variety of instruments
  • Built-in newsfeed offering information on other BOSS products
  • Includes 21-segment meter, note display, and visual tuning indicators
  • User-friendly interface

The app is available on Android and iOS.

5. Entropy Piano Tuner.

Last (but certainly not least) is Entropy Piano Tuner. This app helps you tune your piano using a new method that’s based on entropy minimization.

Entropy Piano Tuner takes in the individual characteristics of your instrument to tune with more precision.

You can tune your piano in just three steps.

1. Switch to “Recording mode.”

2. Starting with the leftmost key, play each note, switch to Tuning Mode, and play individual notes.

3. When the note is in-tune, the app echoes the sound.

Entropy Piano Tuner works best with a computer or laptop but also has a phone app.

The app is available on Android and iOS.

Tuning out.

Piano tuning apps make tuning your piano an easy process. Many are free and work seamlessly with phones and computers – making them accessible to everyone.

Apps are convenient. They turn our phones into the ultimate musical sidekick.

Piano apps use game theory to make your lessons fun, engaging, and affordable. The Simply Piano app allows you to learn piano at your own pace in a structured manner. You can even use it as a supplement for your piano lessons.

You’ll be playing your favorite songs in no time!

Exploring Simply Piano, one of the best piano learning apps available for Android devices

Wondering what are the best piano apps for Android in 2022? This article is a compilation of the best apps to start learning piano.

The Android versus Apple battle is ongoing. The camps are forming. Swapping sides is akin to treason.

Each device has its benefits, but not all apps can run on both platforms. So, if you are looking for a piano app for your Android, you want to make sure you find one compatible with your device.

Luckily, when looking for the best piano app, you can find a wide array of options available for your Android.

Find the best piano apps for your Android.

If you want to learn piano, an app can help you progress. But with so many options on the table, you need to narrow down your choices.

Before you purchase a lifetime subscription to a piano app, ask yourself the following questions:

Who’s learning to play the piano?

Some piano apps are kid-friendly, while others are better suited for adults. Some apps are flexible and meet the needs of either party.

Do you want to pick up a new hobby? Or, are you looking for a more productive way for your kid to spend time than playing video games all day?

Look at the app’s target audience to know which app is the best choice for you (or your kid).

What skill level do you need?

If you are a beginning student, you want an app that covers the basics. However, you don’t want to reinvent the wheel if you just need to brush up on your skills. Some apps focus on games and very basic skills, while others can take you from beginner to advanced.

Think about what you already know and want to learn before making your final choice.

Do you have an acoustic piano, digital piano, or keyboard?

Some apps are flexible. You can use them with acoustic pianos, digital pianos, and keyboards.

However, you have to plug some apps into the keyboard or digital piano to give you real-time advice on your skills.

Other apps are designed to learn directly on the app without needing to access a real instrument. Consider what instrument you have or don’t have before signing on the dotted line.

What is your price range?

Most apps offer a free trial period where you can see if the app works for you. Others offer limited free services that you can enjoy long-term.

However, when you purchase an app, you get a wide range of benefits that you can’t get for free. If you try the app and enjoy it, you can sign up on a monthly or year-long basis. Some even offer lifetime subscriptions!

Subscribing to an app is significantly cheaper than in-person lessons. Also, with an app, you can pick up your device as often as you want to improve your piano skills on the piano.

Let’s look at some of the top piano apps for Android devices in 2022.

1. Simply Piano

The Simply Piano app has millions of users and is available for Android and Apple devices. You can also buy a family plan to download on multiple devices. Whether you are a child or an adult, you can enjoy the step-by-step teaching methods of this app.
